    Foreign Studies College of NEU was established on September 15, 1999, whose predecessors were the Departments of English Literature and Russian Literature founded in 1923. In 1949, English Teaching and Researching Office was set up in Foundation College. In September, 1984, the Department of Foreign Language Class was built. And in 1993, Foreign Language Department emerged and began to enroll English majors.
    FSC is composed of the Departments of English, Japanese, Russian and German. Currently, FSC has four sections,including two College English sections, Graduate English section and French section; and has 1 primary discipline, 6 secondary disciplines and 8 research institutes. At present, FSC has a teaching and administrative staff of approximately 150, including 10 professors, 46 associate professors and 20 international scholars. FSC has 720 students, among whom 120 MA students and 600 undergraduates.
    In recent year, FSC has achieved a lot in the reform of college foreign language teaching, multimedia and online teaching, comparative study on Chinese and Japanese culture, and study on American culture. FSC has won the second prize at the National Teaching Achievement Awards, one National Course of Excellence, two Provincial Courses of Excellence; has compiled one textbooks selected as the best book in National Higher Education Project, nearly 40 textbooks approved by the 11th Five-Year Plan Period National Higher Education Textbook Plan, the Ministry of Education, and some other institutions; and has conducted about 30 projects at the national and provincial level. It was also selected as the model of reforming college English teaching in Liaoning Province and of the Ministry of Education.
    FSC has been expanding academic cooperation and exchange with more than 40 colleges and universities both at home and abroad. Every year, nearly 30% students seize the opportunity to exchange and learn in England, America, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Russia, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
    To meet the educational goal of FSC—“Enable students to master a foreign language; to meet the requirements of various fields; and to become talents with a strong sense of social responsibility and international vision”—it offered multiple level education for students of different educational backgrounds from different countries. It stresses the cultivation of the international vision, the overall quality and the foreign language skills. In recent three years, among 70 students have done exceptionally well in all the nationwide and provincial foreign language contests. The employment of graduates remained 95%, 30% of whom pursue further education at home and 10% abroad.
    The long-term goal of FSC, set in accordance to that of Northeastern University as a research-oriented comprehensive university, is to follow the conception of “Spread the culture of east and west, cultivate talents of international vision”, and to make the most of multi-disciplinary resources and advantages of the university in benefit for featured foreign language disciplines. It strives to provide best foreigh language courses and resources to assist the university cultivate talents of originality, and to construct an international teaching and research oriented FSC
